Solid Timber Door Maintenance

There is nothing more beautiful than the texture and warmth of a solid timber door to greet you on arrival!

They have a weight and solidity that canot be matched by a hollow door, and the tone and grain of solid natural timber is timeless in its attraction.

Jarrah, Red Gum and Ironbark are perfect for front door positions with full sun and water exposure, but if you have an undercover and protected area, any hardwood timber can be used to create the door of you dreams!

Once you have you door in situ, it’s important to keep it well maintained to protect against the elements. Timber that is left untreated can grey off over time, dry out and eventually crack, ruining both the look and longevity of the door.

We recommend that if your door is located in a well protected area, then a top up coat of Osmo UV-Protection Oil can be painted on with a quality brush at the first signs of greying of the timber. Our workshop team advise that 2 coats are best, applied to both sides of your door. On a 2 coat application, the UV Protection Oils block the greying process of the timber by a UV protection factor of 12, when compared with untreated timber. All untreated exterior timber will grey off over time, but UV Protection oil has been developed to slow the greying process. Due to the high level of UV rays that we have in Australia, the clear UV Protection Oils have a lifespan of 4 - 6 months for timber in fully exposed weather conditions, and 12-18 months in areas that are totally weather protected.

This is an example of a door showing weather damage. Areas of the exposed timber have oxidised and look patchy and greyish in tone, the rest of the door looks very dry…. the owners were not sure if a finish had ever been applied to it, and got in touch with us for some help!

Our Head furniture maker Luke has recommended that a door that is in trouble like this will need to be sanded down to remove any marks, with nothing higher than 180 grit sandpaper and an orbital sander. Then 2 coats of the Osmo UV-Protection Oil can be painted on following the grain direction. It’s best to get a professional to help with this to achieve a smooth finish…

This is the beautiful double door entrance to our Torquay Showroom, crafted from high feature recycled Messmate.

This is the Osmo UV-Protection Oil, created from a blend of natural oils and waxes which is a fabulous product in many ways. It has a low satin sheen, and is biocide free which means it is safe to use internally on timber doors as well as timber window frames. It can also be used with confidence on outdoor dining furniture, where food is shared and kids play :)
