We source our recycled timber from Timber Zoo in Geelong. Our recycled Messmate timber is reclaimed from buildings or bridges that are being taken down. The timber then has the nails and other hardware removed, dried to under 12% and cut to a uniform size.
If we are sourcing new timber, we ensure that it is all certified as being from sustainable and ethical plantations. These certifications include FSC. The new timbers used to create our wooden furniture are American Oak, Australian Chestnut, Walnut, Tasmanian Blackwood and Messmate. These are sourced from Mathews Timber in Melbourne.
The Bombora timber furniture aesthetic is modern design combined with timber full of character. Recycled timber is more likely to have a variance of grain, tone and sap lines as it is slow growing and affected by the natural changes in the environment. Timber grown in plantations tends to have a more uniform and straight grain pattern, with fewer sap lines and knots. Recycled timber has features such as iron staining from nails and tiger grain patterns from being exposed to the elements which adds individuality to a piece that cannot be reproduced.
Timbers that have more consistent grains and less natural feature such as sap lines are select-grade Blackbutt, American Oak and Australian Chestnut.
