Solid Timber Kitchen & Bathroom Joinery - Lauren Barton Bellbrae Project

We recently collaborated with local artist Lauren Barton to design & install a myriad of solid timber cabinetry for her idyllic property in Bellbrae, Victoria. We worked together to design solid timber cabinetry throughout the kitchen, living & bathroom areas using locally sourced recycled Messmate timber. Sustainable, locally sourced materials were were prioritised throughout this mindful renovation to compliment the surrounding coastal landscape.

We primarily work with recycled Messmate as we prefer to source timber that has low travel miles & is readily available from our local timber suppliers. Generally, recycled Messmate has been salvaged from residential & commercial building sites in the Geelong, Otway & Melbourne regions prior to be being re-milled and repurposed. One of the added bonuses of working with salvaged timber is that you can occasionally see the original ‘recycled’ features such as nail / pin holes etc. from its previous life!

A beautiful 60mm thick recycled Messmate timber mantle was custom made to compliment the earthy textures, tones (& artwork!) that surround the open fireplace

Tasmanian Blackwood Timber

Tasmanian Blackwood is a beautiful timber highly sought after for its impressive appearance and finish. The heartwood features a rich warm brown tone with highlights of gold and chocolate brown. This is often accompanied by reddish streaks or a narrow band of darker colour indicative of the growth rings. The sapwood is much paler in appearance.

This timber comes from the Acacia Melanoxylon tree, which is native to the southern and eastern parts of Australia. It is grown in large volumes for commercial use in Tasmania, hence its name. It can grow up to 15 metres in height and produces a magnificent display of yellow wattle flowers during winter and spring.

Tasmanian Blackwood timber has a medium/fine and even texture. Its grain can be straight, but is often wavy with a distinct fiddleback pattern. Blackwood is an easy timber to cut and craft, it polishes up to a beautifully smooth finish and is an ideal choice for a whole variety of different uses. Its unique appearance sees it highly prized for musical instrument and furniture making, carving, turning, flooring, boat building and gunstock crafting.

Bespoke Timber Vanities - Tathra

Modern, striking and functional, our beautiful Tathra floating timber vanity with its highly durable stone top is the perfect addition to your new bathroom.

The Tathra solid hardwood timber vanity features a 40mm thick aris edge Stone Ambassador top, soft close drawers and shadowline finger-pull handles to create a sleek and functional look. We personalise the design of every hardwood timber vanity to suit our clients needs, focusing on quality craftsmanship and maximum functionality. We customise the internal structures of each bespoke timber vanity to suit individual plumbing/basin choice and to optimise storage space. The overall look & configuration can be adjusted by choosing drawers, cupboards or open shelving.

The internal structure of our hardwood timber vanities can be crafted from solid timber or white melamine depending on budget and preference. The vanity will look exactly the same on the outside, no matter which internal material has been selected.

We enjoy making Tathra vanities from locally sourced recycled Messmate timber with either black stained or natural shadow lines to suit individual bathroom aesthetics. We prefer to use timbers that are hard wearing, have low travel miles & are readily available recycled. A quintessential piece of Messmate timber is full of character and heavily featured with beautiful sap lines, gum veins and well defined rings. When requested, we also use newly harvested timber that has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. You can read more about the varieties of timber that we work with here.

We use the Osmo Polyx finish with its natural ingredients and high performance to keep the timber on our vanities looking beautiful and resistant to humidity and water spills.

Timber Furniture Repair with Osmo

In the Bombora Workshop all our pieces of timber furniture are sealed before delivery with an amazing product called Osmo Polyx-Oil. We have chosen to use this because of its many beneficial features, which include its environmentally friendly non toxic ingredients, its extreme durability and its breathable finish that allows the natural beauty of timber to shine through. You can read more about why we love this product so much here.

We often get questions from customers asking our advice on how they can repair little scratches and scuffs that just happen sometimes in day to day life, no matter how careful we are. Thankfully, it is actually very easy to repair an Osmo finished surface!

We asked Luke our Head Furniture Maker, to pass on his expert tips to help you DIY your way through the repair process, ensuring your custom timber furniture stays looking beautiful for years to come.

Things You Will Need:

  • Painters Tape

  • 180 grit Sandpaper

  • 500 grit Sandpaper

  • Clean Rag

  • Osmo Polyx Oil- Matte

https://www.bomboracustomfurniture.com.au/shop/polyx-oil-original

  • Microfibre Roller

https://www.bomboracustomfurniture.com.au/shop/osmo-application-roller (or buy a good quality small microfibre roller from your local hardware store)

How To Repair:

The furniture top is actually several pieces of timber glued together. You will only need to sand the stick of timber that has the damage on it. You can make out individual sticks of timber by seeing tone differences and also you can see the glue line between the sticks.

  • We recommend taping up the sticks of timber you don't want to sand.

  • Sand the damaged stick of timber back with 180 grit sandpaper by hand, ensuring you sand with the grain not against.

  • Do your best to only sand the damaged stick of timber, not the surrounding sticks.

  • Sand the whole stick of timber back to a point where the damage disappears

  • Apply a coat of Osmo Polyx Oil with a microfiber roller to the entire top of your furniture piece, not just the damaged part.

  • Allow 24hrs, then apply a second coat of Osmo with a microfiber roller.

  • Allow 24hrs, then apply a third coat of Osmo with a microfiber roller.

  • Hand sand the surface with 500 grit sandpaper to remove any bumps in the finish.

  • Apply a coat of Osmo again. This time remove all excess with a clean rag.

Ensure that no water is allowed on the piece for at least 2 weeks to allow the finish to cure.

That’s it! These simple steps will help you repair all sorts of scratches, spills and little accidents, ensuring your piece of custom timber retains its beauty as a feature piece in your home for many, many years to come.

The finished timber is best maintained using the Osmo Maintenance Kit (Osmo liquid wax cleaner, microfibre cleaning cloth & Osmo liquid wax spray) which has been formulated specifically to be used with a Polyx finished surface.

We recommend using the Maintenance Kit every 3 months on high use areas such as kitchen benches, vanities, desks or dining tables and 12 monthly application for all other items such as TV units.

If you need any further advice, please contact our customer service team on info@bomboracustomfurniture.com.au.

Australian Wormy Chestnut Timber

Wormy Chestnut is a collection of newly harvested Eucalyptus species including Messmate, Silvertop Ash and Cuttail. Similar to Messmate, this timber shows evidence of the harsh Australian climate with regular exposure to drought, strong winds, fire and flood. Wormy Chestnut typically features gum pockets and veins as well as subtle small holes / black features from ambrosia beetles and pin hole borers.

Wormy Chestnut timber is a hard wearing and durable timber species, ideal for furniture making. It is also sustainably harvested, budget friendly and FSC certified (Forest Stewardship Council). With character filled sap lines, black markings and pin holes, Wormy Chestnut has the look of a recycled Messmate timber without the additional costs!

Wormy Chestnut timber has a versatile, straw blonde / light brown tone, similar to Oak. This type of timber can also be called Australian Chestnut when it has been hand picked to have minimal sap lines, pin holes and pockets.

Australian Messmate Timber - Recycled & Newly Harvested

Messmate is otherwise known as Eucalyptus obliqua and is often grouped with Tasmanian Oak and Victorian Ash at the timber yard. This species is widespread in the southeastern regions of Australia and can grow up to 90m tall in a wide range of soils. A quintessential piece of character filled Messmate timber is heavily featured with gum veins, well defined rings and a course grain. The colour of the Messmate timber ranges from a pale brown to light yellow with a hint of peach. Other than furniture making, Messmate also has a range of uses in construction and protected outdoor areas.

As each piece of Messmate timber is so unique, we ask our clients to let us know the level of natural character they prefer as part of the custom order process. To provide an easy to care surface, we fill the sap lines / gum veins with black resin to further accentuate the natural features of Messmate timber and leave the surface completely smooth.

We primarily work with recycled Messmate as we prefer to source timber that has low travel miles and is readily available from our local timber suppliers. Generally, recycled Messmate has been salvaged from residential and commercial building sites in the Geelong, Otway & Melbourne regions prior to be being re-milled and repurposed. One of the added bonuses of working with salvaged timber is that you can occassionally see the original ‘recycled’ features such as nail / pin holes etc. from its previous life!

We are also able to source newly harvested Messmate from our local Victorian timber suppliers. Similar to Austalian Wormy Chestnut timber, New Messmate is a sustainable timber choice and is readily available. Overall, new Messmate timber has very similar natural character features to recycled Messmate (gum veins, sap lines etc,) but tends to have slightly less colour / tone variation. New Messmate timber is also a very cost effective / budget friendly option for furniture making as newly harvested timbers generally require less work (than recycled timbers) at the timber yard (removal of nails etc.) prior to dispatch.

The best thing you can do for your country to reduce the impact of Coronavirus - buy Australian made

These are challanging times. If you were to believe the fear mongering media, it seems like the world as we know it is going to end and there is nothing we can do about it. However, there are many things that you can do to support your own health, community and country as we emerge on the other side, safely and strongly.

As a retired heath professional, there are many things you can do to increase your resistance to viruses and speed up recovery if infected. Wash your hands….lots. Eat “real” food including a wide range of vegetables. Drink lots of water. Get enough sleep. Go outside and move. Connect with your community. Prioritise finding calm as fear can reduce your immunity. For me, I prioritise meditation, yoga and spending time in my garden. Others may want consider activities that also involve time outdoors eg. surfing, cooking, bike riding, craft and having a laugh with friends!

Australian made furniture

Despite the uncertaintity, you can make a BIG difference to your local community and our Australian economy by reviewing how you choose to spend your money. We know that buying local is important however, I want to share with you how important…

Within our business (other than Luke & myself), we have 5 staff (3 full time, 1 part time, 1 casual). In our wider business ecosystem, we collaborate and support many other local businesses, small and large. Some of the businesses that help us to manufacture our furniture…

Cabinet maker - A local Torquay based cabinet maker creates all of the internal structures for our timber vanities as well as working with us on larger projects such as timber kitchens. This business hires 3 other local people.

Metal facricator - We work with a Melbourne based company who manufacures all of our metal dining table legs plus other mental compontants for custom projects. They are also a family owned business with young children..

Recycled Timber - We source our recycled timber from two different timber yards. One in Geelong, around a 30 mintue drive from our workshop or and another in Melbourne.

New timber - We primarily source our new timber from a family owned and run timberyard in Melbourne but also a small amount from a local agroforesty practitioner.

Hardware - We purchase screws, hinges, drawer runners etc from a couple of small distributors based in Geelong and Melbourne.

Glue - Purchased from a small famaily business in Melbourne

Finish - We purchase our timber finish, Osmo, from a family business who has been importing the product from Germany for over 10 years.

Delivery - There are several one man operators that bring timber from the timber yards to our workshop in Torquay.

Aside from the businesses that supply products that go into the manufacturing of our furniture, there are several other businesses that help us run our business.

Bookkeeper - Local Geelong based company balance our books

Accountant - Local torquay based accountant

SEO - Melbourne based comany manages our online presence.

Computer doctor - local based magicion who has saved us many times

Workshop - we rent our showroom and workshop

Delivery to customers - we work with local Geelong based furniture removalists to deliver furniture to our clients in the Surfcoast, Geelong and Bellarine Peninsula areas as well as Melbourne. We also support another Melbourne based company with a larger crew who help to freight our pieces interstate.

So everytime you take your wallet out and spend your dough, you are not just helping to provide a jobs in the business you are dealing with, you are injecting much needed funds into many businesses that hire many staff. These staff then go on the spend their money and so on and so on….

And remember…. wash you hands!!

Bespoke Timber Vanities - Customisable Internal Structures

Bombora pride ourselves in custom building & designing our solid timber vanities. We personalise the design of every vanity in order to suit our clients needs, focusing on quality craftsmanship & maximum functionality. Rather than comrpomising on design & practicality, we customise the internal structures of your vanity to suit your plumbing / basin & optimise storage space. You can also choose the overall look & configuration of your vanity such as drawers, cupboards or open shelving.

Not only is your vanity design personalised, you also get to choose the type of timber and the character levels. Here is a link to the most common types of timber we use to create our pieces. We primarily use timber from the local Victorian Eucalyptus species of Messmate to build our furniture.  We prefer to use timbers that are hard wearing, have low travel miles & are readily available recycled. When requested, we also use newly harvested timber that has been certified by the Forest Stewardship council (FSC) such as American Oak and Wormy Chestnut

We can create the internal structures of your solid timber vanity from solid timber or white melamine with either a u-shaped drawer or small cavity design (depending on where your waste is located) to maximise available storage space. No matter which option you choose, your bespoke vanity will look exactly the same from the outside. As long as you re-apply the Osmo maintinence spray wax every few months to the solid timber structures, both options are just as durable & resistant to humidity / water spills.

If you prefer solid timber inside & out, the entire piece will be constructed by our team of talented furniture makers!

Fifteen Trees - Sustainability & Eco Responsible Business Practice

For the past five years Bombora Custom Furniture have incorporated a ‘one piece – one tree’ policy as part of our business practice. For every piece of furniture created, Fifteen Trees will plant one tree. These plantings help to reduce the environmental impact of freight and general equipment maintenance associated with running a business. Bombora owners Luke & Alison Collins take sustainablity and being eco-responsible very seriously and are constantly reviewing their business practices to ensure that Bombora products positively impact the environment.

Bombora Trees 2.JPG
Bombora Trees 3.JPG
Bombora Trees 1.JPG

Bombora’s trees have been planted at a property near Wangoon, Warrnambool. The site is an ex-pine plantation, and the revegetation project is designed to alleviate the harm a monoculture tree crop can do to the soil, and to the surrounding biodiversity in general. Hopkins Falls Landcare Group hopes the planting, which contains many Manna Gums, will help build resilience in local fauna. According to Fifteen Trees ‘Diverse tree and shrub corridor plantings may also enable a wide range of species to broaden their horizons, giving them some protection against food scarcity and disease, habitat threats like fire or flood, and allow new family groups to emerge and thrive’.

Introducing the Jarosite Solid Timber Black Metal Leg Dining Table

Our latest dining table design ‘Jarosite’ features bespoke angled matte black powder coated steel legs with a beautiful, solid recycled Australian Messmate hardwood top. Rich in warm brown and cream tones, recycled Messmate is known for its swirling grains and frequent sap lines making for a character filled timber.

The Jarosite dining table can also be customised for use as a contemporary outdoor furniture setting or constructed with solid timber angled box legs, see our Jan Juc dining table design.

Past clients have also opted to have the angled black steel hoop legs reversed, see below…

The prototype Jarosite dining table is currently on sale! For more info follow the link!

Introducing the Luna floating TV unit

Introducing the beautiful Luna floating TV unit! The wall hung TV stand style is gaining in popularity because of its modern streamlined aesthetic. With our technology being whittled down to the minimal with smart TV’s and online streaming services, we now have very little to store. This piece of furniture is more often used to store items completely unrelated to the actual TV such as kids toys, magazines or photo albums. It does however create a lovely sense of visual balance in the room as well as creating styling opportunities.

Recycled Messmate timber

This showstopping TV unit is created from stunning sticks of recycled Messmate timber. This is a native Australian hardwood from the Eucalyptus family that grows in the southern states of our fair country. Messmate timber is known for its black saplines and wavy grain patterns. The cream to mid tone brown of the wood ensures that it suits the modern home and many colour palettes. This timber is available both reclaimed and new. The difference in the appearance of these timbers is that the recycled version has telltale signs of its previous life such as nail or bolt holes. The reclaimed Messmate also has more sapline features and varying tones.

Custom TV unit

Every one of our pieces of furniture are made to order to our clients specifications. This means that we will create the TV cabinet to your dimensions, timber of choice as well as the configuration. The design can contain drawers, cupboards, open shelves or a combination. Here is a link to the most common timber types that we use to create our furniture. All of these timbers are finished with a natural matte oil and wax rather than a stain. To ensure longevity, we suggest using a timber that has the natural tone of your desired aesthetic rather than using a stain.

Melamine or solid timber internals

We offer both melamine and solid timber internals to create our TV units depending on desired aesthetic and budget. No matter which option you choose, the cabinet will look exactly the same from the outside.

Mr Darcy - Modern Round Dining Table with metal legs

The Mr Darcy round dining table is sophisticated yet playful. This table, designed by our head furniture maker Luke Collins, is a modern take on the mid century tapered leg and features a matte black metal spline that feeds into a timber leg.

A round table works beautifully in a square dining room and creates flexibility of seating options. A soft edge is a lovely element to introduce to a space to add visual intrigue.

Each one of our Mr Darcy round tables are made to order therefore are completely customisable. The metal portions are custom fabricated in Melbourne by a small family business with an eye for detail. The timber parts of the dining table are created by our team of furniture makers at our Torquay workshop.

The timber used to create the dining table is up to you. For a modern or luxe industrial aesthetic, recycled Messmate or Wormy Chestnut are great options. For a high contrast contemporary look, the pale ash blonde tones of American Oak timber looks beautiful against the black metal legs. For a darker option, the creamy chocolate colours of American Black Walnut create a truly unique piece of furniture.

Standard number of seats for a round dining table are:

6 seater - 1200mm diameter

8 seater - 1600mm diameter

10 seater - 1900mm diameter - ensure that this size will fit through doorways!
