Understanding Semi-Inset Basins: A Minimalist Basin Style with Custom Design Flexibility
If you’re dreaming of a clean, understated bathroom aesthetic but still want the warmth of a solid timber top, a semi-inset basin could be the perfect choice. At Bombora, we’re seeing more of our clients opt for this style, and with good reason. Semi-inset basins offer a simple silhouette with practical benefits and can be customised into any of our timber vanity designs.
Here’s everything you need to know when considering a semi-inset basin for your bathroom project.

What is a Semi-Inset Basin?
A semi-inset basin is a hybrid between a top-mount and undermount basin. It sits partially above the benchtop, while the lower portion is recessed into the vanity.
Unlike a top-mount basin, which sits entirely above the bench, or an undermount, which is installed completely below, the semi-inset strikes a balance, giving you a lower profile look without losing the sense of visual softness and functional basin depth.
Why does this matter?
A semi-inset basin creates a cleaner line and makes it easier to keep your benchtop looking neat. The raised rim helps contain splashes, while the lower positioning feels integrated and unobtrusive.

A Smart Choice For a Timber Top Bathroom Vanity
Solid timber benchtops bring character, texture and warmth to a bathroom, but they’re not suitable for undermount basins as water can pool in the join between the basin and the top.
Because the basin lip sits on top of the timber, water exposure is minimised and the timber can be properly sealed around the cutout. This gives you the best of both worlds: the minimal profile of an undermount and the durability needed for a timber surface.

Suitable for a Stone Top Vanity Too
If you’re leaning towards a stone-top wooden vanity, a semi-inset basin works beautifully here as well. The low profile of the basin creates an elegant and seamless transition between basin and top.
Whether you're after a subtle contrast or a tone-on-tone look, this basin style complements a wide range of finishes and palettes.

Basin required on-site
Every semi-inset basin is slightly different in shape and depth, so to ensure a perfect fit, we’ll need to have your chosen basin on-site. This allows our team to:
Create the correct cutout - unfortunately, templates can be incorrect!
Design the internal structure of the vanity to fit the basin
Maximise functionality around the basin footprint

Additional Costs for a semi-inset basin
As a semi-inset basin requires additional design time and custom internal joinery, semi-inset vanities attract a custom build fee.
Depending on the profile of your basin, the overall height of the vanity may need top be increased to ensure usable storage which further adding to the cost.
